Mulch Like a Pro: The Right Way to Care for Your Trees

Don’t Let Mulch Become a Mountain: Why Volcano Mulching Hurts Trees

Here at Green Valley Tree LLC, we’re passionate about keeping your trees healthy and beautiful. One common landscaping practice we see that can actually harm trees is volcano mulching.

What is Volcano Mulching?

Volcano mulching refers to piling mulch high around the base of a tree, creating a cone shape that resembles a volcano. While it may look neat and tidy, this practice can have serious consequences for your tree’s health.

Why is Volcano Mulching Bad?

There are several reasons why volcano mulching is detrimental to trees:

  • Reduced Oxygen Flow: Tree roots need oxygen to survive and function properly. Piling mulch against the trunk cuts off air circulation, suffocating the roots.
  • Moisture Problems: A thick layer of mulch around the trunk can trap moisture, creating a constantly damp environment. This can lead to bark rot and fungal diseases.
  • Root Flare Suffocation: Young trees develop a natural root flare at the base of the trunk. Volcano mulching can bury this flare, hindering proper root growth and making the tree unstable.
  • Pest Invaders: The damp environment created by volcano mulching can attract termites and other harmful insects.

How to Mulch Properly

Mulch can be a valuable tool for retaining moisture, suppressing weeds, and regulating soil temperature. However, it’s crucial to use mulch correctly to benefit your trees. Here’s what you should do:

  • Apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch: This is deep enough to be effective but not so thick as to smother the roots.
  • Maintain a mulch-free zone around the trunk: Leave 3-6 inches of space between the mulch and the base of the tree.
  • Spread the mulch evenly: Create a donut shape around the tree, extending out to the dripline (the outermost edge of the canopy).

Use the right mulch material: Opt for shredded bark or wood chips that will decompose naturally over time. Avoid using materials like gravel or plastic.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your mulch is helping your trees thrive, not harming them.  If you have any questions about mulching or other tree care practices, don’t hesitate to contact the certified arborists at Green Valley Tree LLC.
